    I’m so glad I’ve found this video!!! Thank you for going into detail about colouring, I’ve found it hard to find videos that give advice in context with wand making and this was perfect!! It makes me think of a growing virus, I bet it would go wonderfully with makeup on the users hands replicating this effect, so it looks as if the ‘virus’/ dark magic etc is coming from them and through the wand!? Do you use leather dye a lot for the deep, dark crake within wands? Is there any other product you use at all or have you found that to be the best?

    • @mythimpressions
      @mythimpressions Місяць тому

      Weird organic design for sure. I thought it looked a bit fungus like as well. I don't use dye TOO often, but as an accent like on this wand it seems to work well. I do like it better than paint because it penetrates the wood and is less likely to be rubbed/scratched off. Heat and ebonizing fluid are my go to for color change most of the time, but they are limited in application and are only browns, grays, and blacks in color.

    • @mythimpressions
      @mythimpressions Місяць тому

      Thank you. I have considered resin options, and may try it in the future, but not sure if I would like it with this carved design. I think it would look really cool, but it would fill all the spaces and smooth out flush with the surface. I was thinking if I used a glow powder in the cracks and just used a simple clear coat to seal it in, I could retain the tactile texture. Hmmm....more experiments to come I guess! LOL Oh, I'm turning at about 2000 RPM for most of the work, but slow it down some for sanding. And lowest speed when applying any dye so it doesn't sling it everywhere.

    • @x0ax
      @x0ax Місяць тому

      @@mythimpressions Thank you for your answer and of course good luck with your experiments. I'm just starting to learn how to properly turn on a lathe, and thanks to your videos I'm gaining a lot of theoretical experience, which I'm trying to put into practice. I have already made few wands for my daughter which we are both happy with, of course they are not perfect due to my lack of experience, but I have a lot of fun making them. Unfortunately, the fun ends when is time to sharpen the chisels to avoid these torn fibers 😅.. I have a lot of pine waste and I learn on it, but as soon as I learn how to sharpen chisels properly, I will try it on harder oak. Maybe one day I will be proud of my work and share the result. Best regards and I'm waiting for your next videos 😉

      @mythimpressions Місяць тому

      @@x0ax So glad they are helpful! Sharpening tools is something I've not really covered in my vids, but I honestly picked up a lot of tips watching other wood turning videos myself. Having a low speed grinder and a lathe tool sharpening system was key for me to keep the correct angles. And having stones to touch up the edges as needed too. Maybe I'll try a sharpening vid in the near future, or at least point to a few other vids I've seen to help folks out. Practice is the best teacher so keep at it and don't be afraid to mess up. Best of luck and thank you for your support! :D

      @mythimpressions Місяць тому

      Yes, Maple is great to work with and handles some things perfectly, but the downside is it's resistance to some of the easy to do color alterations. Seems like a great discussion for the Discord server once we get that better established. :D

    Beautiful! Could you share the name/details of the chuck you’re using? I turn pens, wands, and other spindly things…and the clatter is driving me crazy. • @mythimpressions
      @mythimpressions Місяць тому

      I'm using a Nova chuck with the mini spigot jaws which I believe will tighten to about 8mm round. Chatter is the worst to deal with when turning long, thing things for sure. Having super sharp tools is a must, but with Maple, purple heart, jotoba, padouk, and other super dense woods; it's almost impossible to totally eliminate. The less unsupported wood, the better. A steady rest can help too if you have room to work around it. I talk a bit about it in a previous video: ua-cam.com/video/79if8UBUtNo/v-deo.htmlsi=GNlmXIXXjFEohlDM

    • @mythimpressions
      @mythimpressions Місяць тому

      I'd love to play with fractal burning, but it's just SO dangerous. I think it would look cool on wands, but it could also be a flop due to the small diameter. I wonder if it would try to spread wide and just cover to much in the round instead of thinner lines running lengthwise. IDK...would be a cool experiment if I wasn't afraid of zapping myself to death. :D

    • @mythimpressions
      @mythimpressions 3 місяці тому

      I cut my blanks to about 3/4" in thickness and they are usually between 13" and 15" long (except for apprentice wands). I prefer slightly thicker wood to start with, but most of the fancy woods I can get at my local supplier ate 3/4" thick by 24" (sometimes 36") long. Since there's less room for mistakes, I have to be very picky about making sure the wood is milled flat and straight before I buy it.

      So much depends on where your starting level is at, but number one is safety. Read all the tool manuals and research or take classes on using a lathe safely and be sure to also use dust mask and face shield. But as far as turning a wand specifically: go slow, use sharp tools, and support the wood (especially as it gets thinner). I think my earliest vids are a lot longer because I have more about my methods so you may want to watch some of those as well. Thanks for the support! :D

    That ebonizing solution trick is a godsend! I make wand with nothing but a box cutter, a drill with a sander, and sandpaper, and I really wand to avoid paint or artificial stain. I’m still a novice, but this trick is great!

    • @mythimpressions
      @mythimpressions 4 місяці тому

      Glad it's working for you. My first wands were done with nothing but flap wheels on a drill press. I think heat is my next "go to" after ebonizer. Getting contrast in designs with a wood burner is nice, and using it to sever wood grain helps control how the ebonizing solution moves up the fibers; at least for designs I don't totally ebonize. On the lathe I can just use a wire friction burn, but I've used a wood burner for more intricate line work. Best of luck and thanks so much for watching!

  • @MNMNT_OG

    I was always wondering.. when you use the wire, or also when you touch the wood while it's turning - doesn't it hurt?

    • @mythimpressions
      @mythimpressions 4 місяці тому

      Not at all. When I touch the wood, I'm feeling for smoothness and defects. It's a light touch, not enough to build up enough friction to burn. The wire does get hot enough to burn (obviously), but it's localized at the point of friction. If I were to touch the wire at the contact point right after use, it would indeed burn, but the heat dissipates fairly quick and I stay away from the hot part. It takes time for heat to move and you can usually feel an area warming before it gets hot enough to burn skin.
